“Top level care is only available to a limited amount of children because we are not communicating and we are not working together, hopefully iSPI will change that,” said Dr. Anthony Chang, iSPI’s founder.
As members of iSPI, nearly 40 institutions across the country and abroad have worked together to establish a four-day conference focused on providing a space for entrepreneurs, innovators, clinicians, administrators, patients and parents to promote innovation for children and their health.
The conference, appropriately named Pediatrics 2040 is comprised of a series of interactive workshops, a speaker series, and showcases for new startups and innovations. Workshops will focus on developments in genomic medicine, medical intelligence, and 3D printing.
Exciting speakers from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines have been lined up for the event. The speakers include: Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, Dr. Daniel Kraft, and Don Lombardi. Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong is a physician, surgeon and scientist who has pioneered novel therapies for both diabetes and cancer. Soon-Shiong performed the world’s first encapsulated human islet transplant, the first engineered islet cell transplant and the first pig to man islet cell transplant in diabetic patients. Dr. Daniel Kraft is a Stanford and Harvard-trained physician-scientist, inventor, entrepreneur and innovator. Kraft invented the MarrowMiner, an FDA-approved device for the minimally invasive harvest of bone marrow, and recently founded RegenMed Systems, a company focused on developing technologies to enable adult stem cell based regenerative therapies. Lastly, Don Lombardi created the first intellectual property office at a children’s hospital, and is CEO of the Institute for Pediatric Innovation.
In addition, startups can showcase their inventions to an audience comprised of leaders in the pediatrics field. The new showcase, called Innovation Beach allows providers, investors, health plans, and representatives from the most innovative pediatric hospitals worldwide to see what innovators are dreaming up.
The conference will be held in Laguna Niguel, California on January 6-9, 2015, looking over the coast of the Pacific Ocean. For more information regarding event registration and sponsorship, please visit www.peds2040.org.
